Organising an event in Chicago posed certain obstacles but those were far outweighed by the opportunities. I learned that the Chicago market is substantively different from both London and New York, the major bulge bracket firms while no doubt having some presence are not the main cut and thrust of Chicago; smaller and more nimble 'Prop Shops' are the lifeblood of this city. I also discovered that many of these 'Prop Shops' had been founded by ex CME floor traders who wanted to spread their wings a little, and in some cases a lot. Derivatives are what Chicago is best known for and that might have been the original specialty of these creative and adventurous operations, but in 2012 they have a much more diverse portfolio of interests.

Reading MAD Magazine as a kid, I was often confused as to what the meaning of Alfred E. Neuman’s signature catch-phrase – “What, me worry?” -- actually meant. As I tried to put it into some context, based on each new MAD magazine cover, I had constructed a meaning that I was quite sure was correct – that “I don’t need to worry about anything….especially things that I don’t understand.”

Move over Disney, Universal Studios and Sea World, a new theme park – Enterprise Connect – appeared in Orlando this past week. It only stayed open for 4 days but was host to the largest companies in the communications industry and thousands of visitors. Enticed by the theme “Communications Transforming Business,” participants excitedly descended on a variety of sessions and dozens of vendor exhibits. Being a bit of a ride junkie and having already done those other parks, I could not wait to explore these choices. With so much to experience and with sessions running simultaneously, it was not possible to personally do it all. With that in mind I want to share some of my favorites with you.

It’s that time of the year again – when badge scanners, tchotchkes, industry leaders and new ideas fill a massive room with vendors and capital market firms alike. Yes, I’m talking about tradeshows.
With the highly anticipated event, TradeTech Europe, just around the corner, I thought why not recap one of their sister events that I recently attended in New York? The “Institutional Equity Trading and Technology” Conference was two days of knowledge sharing and thought leadership. The small setting helped create an intimate space, making it more manageable to exclusively speak to other attendees. All of the booths were confined to a single area, making it convenient to visit the exhibitors in an efficient manner. Best of all, the food was quite good too.
