Swap Execution Facilities are game-changers. We knew that.
What we didn’t know is how unprepared the industry feels about the arrival of SEFs and regulation dust-settling. In a recent IPC questionnaire surveying the front-, middle-, and back-office, 62% of participating firms said they were not prepared. A number magnified by 36% who said they didn’t even have a plan in place for when the impending SEF-storm does hit.

Regulation.
The little word, that’s done a lot to the capital markets industry. It’s also a word that has changed the nature of how financial markets participants communicate, report and trade. The trade lifecycle now involves more participants – not only because of the need for more transparency – but firms, both on the buy and sell sides need to continue to differentiate their services to remain competitive.

History is full of examples of crises triggered by unregulated derivatives trading, with the global financial crisis putting the spotlight on the serious inadequacies of the OTC derivatives market and the risks these contracts present to the broader economy. To mitigate this risk, regulatory initiatives, spearheaded by the G20, are now in place to change how they are traded and cleared.

Organising an event in Chicago posed certain obstacles but those were far outweighed by the opportunities. I learned that the Chicago market is substantively different from both London and New York, the major bulge bracket firms while no doubt having some presence are not the main cut and thrust of Chicago; smaller and more nimble 'Prop Shops' are the lifeblood of this city. I also discovered that many of these 'Prop Shops' had been founded by ex CME floor traders who wanted to spread their wings a little, and in some cases a lot. Derivatives are what Chicago is best known for and that might have been the original specialty of these creative and adventurous operations, but in 2012 they have a much more diverse portfolio of interests.

It’s that time of the year again – when badge scanners, tchotchkes, industry leaders and new ideas fill a massive room with vendors and capital market firms alike. Yes, I’m talking about tradeshows.
With the highly anticipated event, TradeTech Europe, just around the corner, I thought why not recap one of their sister events that I recently attended in New York? The “Institutional Equity Trading and Technology” Conference was two days of knowledge sharing and thought leadership. The small setting helped create an intimate space, making it more manageable to exclusively speak to other attendees. All of the booths were confined to a single area, making it convenient to visit the exhibitors in an efficient manner. Best of all, the food was quite good too.

In 1967, the American psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment to determine how many acquaintances it would take to pass a letter between two randomly selected people. He concluded that it took six steps or fewer to connect any two people in the world and coined the term ‘six degrees of separation’. Rapid technological progress and the advent of social networks have further reduced the number of hops required to connect different people and organizations around the globe.

What do tulips have in common with OTC derivatives, you ask? Allow me to introduce you to the phenomenon called the Dutch Tulip Mania of 1637. During the height of the bubble in the winter of 1636, tulip traders were making fortunes of over $61,000 adjusted to current U.S. dollars per month. If ever there was a time to begin gardening, this was it.
