Although this was my first attendance at a TradeTech event, TradeTech Europe felt surprisingly familiar. I wasn’t sure whether it was the comfortable, spacious hall layout or perhaps the presence of the usual trading technology providers. In hindsight, it was actually the themes, talking points and underlying concerns of presenters and attendees alike that felt reassuringly familiar.

If you work with traders, chances are you have probably heard "I don’t care how… just answer me!” one too many times. We’ve heard the same things from some of our very own customers, including top global banks. We know that trading floors are fast paced environments – often times frenetic. Traders need information instantly, and they need it to be accurate – even more so these days, with thinner margins, more competition, and a tougher regulatory environment. That’s why instant collaboration across the trade lifecycle is ever more important, and it’s the reason financial firms are implementing solutions to facilitate that collaboration.

Move over Disney, Universal Studios and Sea World, a new theme park – Enterprise Connect – appeared in Orlando this past week. It only stayed open for 4 days but was host to the largest companies in the communications industry and thousands of visitors. Enticed by the theme “Communications Transforming Business,” participants excitedly descended on a variety of sessions and dozens of vendor exhibits. Being a bit of a ride junkie and having already done those other parks, I could not wait to explore these choices. With so much to experience and with sessions running simultaneously, it was not possible to personally do it all. With that in mind I want to share some of my favorites with you.

It’s that time of the year again – when badge scanners, tchotchkes, industry leaders and new ideas fill a massive room with vendors and capital market firms alike. Yes, I’m talking about tradeshows.
With the highly anticipated event, TradeTech Europe, just around the corner, I thought why not recap one of their sister events that I recently attended in New York? The “Institutional Equity Trading and Technology” Conference was two days of knowledge sharing and thought leadership. The small setting helped create an intimate space, making it more manageable to exclusively speak to other attendees. All of the booths were confined to a single area, making it convenient to visit the exhibitors in an efficient manner. Best of all, the food was quite good too.

In 1967, the American psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment to determine how many acquaintances it would take to pass a letter between two randomly selected people. He concluded that it took six steps or fewer to connect any two people in the world and coined the term ‘six degrees of separation’. Rapid technological progress and the advent of social networks have further reduced the number of hops required to connect different people and organizations around the globe.

The British press are currently relying on two topics for slow news days; the first is the Leveson Inquiry into UK press culture, practice and ethics; the other is the size of bankers’ bonus payments.
Triggered by claims the News of the World newspaper used mobile phone hacking to gain private information, the Leveson Inquiry is posing the question of when information is considered private, or when it is in the public interests and therefore justifies reporting upon.

When the modern Olympic Games began in the late 1800’s, most firms didn’t concern themselves with business continuity planning. In fact, I’m willing to bet my knickers that the term BCP wasn’t even coined then. Cars were just starting to gain momentum – both literally and figuratively speaking – around the same time so you can imagine that traffic wasn’t a major issue during the games either.

What do tulips have in common with OTC derivatives, you ask? Allow me to introduce you to the phenomenon called the Dutch Tulip Mania of 1637. During the height of the bubble in the winter of 1636, tulip traders were making fortunes of over $61,000 adjusted to current U.S. dollars per month. If ever there was a time to begin gardening, this was it.

Interest in direct investment in emerging market equities is increasing but has always been difficult due to regulations on foreign ownership and capital controls. The most relevant of these markets is the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), a collection of the largest of the emerging markets.

I recently attended a conference hosted by IPC called Emerging Markets: Opportunities and Obstacles. At the event, the Tabb Group presented some of their latest research on trading in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Asia. Then a panel of speakers discussed a range of topics related to trading in these markets. The conference also introduced IPC’s new financial extranet, Connexus. Here are some of the insights I took away from the fascinating panel discussion.
